PALM OIL

History of Palm Oil:

Oil Palm tree was actually produced in west Africa and later on imported to Southeast Asia in the 19th century. The fruit of palm is grown in bunches. Palm fruit has a similarity with small plum.

How it's Obtained?

We get 2 types of oils from palm trees. Palm oil is basically extracted from the flesh of fruit whereas Palm kernel oil is obtained from an internal seed called the kernel. Palm oil is considered a productive crop as more oil is produced than any other vegetable oil with minimum use of land.

Use of Palm Oil:

Palm oil has a number of applications in daily life. Fractions of palm oil are used in the manufacturing of prepackaged food, cleaning products, soaps, cosmetics, personal care items, and hair care. Palm wax is another important usage of palm oil which is used in candles. Biofuel is manufactured by palm oil and is well known as green fuel for motor vehicles. Palm oil is extensively used in the food industry as it is cost-effective among other available vegetable oils. Palm oil is a flavorless cooking oil so it actually doesn't affect the taste of products. Food chains have pressure to sell this oil at low prices. Palm oil elongates the lifespan of pre-packaged food. Palm oil is considered a good option for frying rapidly. Palm oil is used in the manufacturing of multiple ingredients as its fatty acid proposition is large and it's highly desirable in the manufacturing of surfactants and emulsifiers. Palm oil is used in almost 50% of the packaged products that we find in supermarkets. It includes doughnuts, chocolate, pizza, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, lipstick. Also, it is used in animal feed.

Characteristics of Palm Oil:

Palm oil has many properties which makes it more useful. It becomes semi-solid at room temperature. It is an antioxidant. It stays stable at high temperatures. It is widely used as cooking oil in Asian countries.

Drawbacks of Palm Oil Extraction:

Palm oil extraction has been a major cause of deforestation of the world's popular forests. It has been said that it's the major cause of damage to the habitat of already endangered species. For example Orangutan, pygmy elephant, and Sumatran rhino. Deforestation and carbon-rich peat soils are major causes of global warming in the world. These issues should also be addressed to save the natural habitat on earth. RSPO (Roundtable of sustainable palm oil) was formed in 2004 in response to the growing concerns over the impact of palm oil extraction on the environment. The RSPO has a production standard authority that sets best practices for palm oil production. RSPO is considered a production standard for setting best practices for palm oil production. Agro trade is committed to following all standards of RSPO.
